Millburn-Short Hills Comes Together for the International Day of Yoga
Millburn / Short Hills, NJ·June 21, 2026
More than eighty residents from Millburn, Short Hills, and surrounding towns gathered on Sunday morning at the Bauer Community Center to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, a free event presented by the Consulate General of India, New York.
This year's gathering took as its theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” a reminder that the practice meets us at every stage of life. The morning drew on the classical teaching of the Charaka Samhita that health is the supreme foundation of a full and meaningful life.
Mr. Amresh Kumar, Vice Consul, addressed the gathering on behalf of the Consulate General of India, welcoming participants and noting the significance of the day for the community. He was joined by his wife, Mrs. Madhu Kumar, who took part in the full morning of practice.
The practice began at 9:00 AM, led by Betsy Davis and Trish Flanagan of Bhakti Barn Yoga in Millburn. Betsy guided a welcoming all-levels session, while Trish offered a parallel chair yoga practice, so participants of every age and ability could take part comfortably. At 10:00 AM, the group settled into stillness with a Heartfulness meditation led by coach Reetika Agarwal of Short Hills, closing the morning on a note of calm.
The event was organized by JhilMil USA, Namastey Millburn (a chapter of Namaste Global), and Vidveda, with the help of a dedicated team of community volunteers. Attendees were welcomed with extra mats on hand, light refreshments, and an easy, unhurried atmosphere that invited newcomers and seasoned practitioners alike.
The morning was also supported by a group of talented young volunteers from Millburn High School, Ayati Jend (Mcee), Ella Ziam, Katie Ding, and Akarsh Kumar, who helped welcome guests and keep the event running smoothly.
The morning also marked the launch of Vidveda's A to Z Asana Dictionary, a classical reference of yoga postures now available at vidveda.com/yoga-dictionary.
As the morning drew to a close, organizers thanked the Consulate, the instructors, the partners, and the volunteers who made the gathering possible, and expressed hope to welcome the community back for many more mornings like it.
