Why Gen Z and older generations seek care differently, and what it takes to meet each where they are
The wellness category has grown steadily for years, yet the needs people care about most are still going unmet. McKinsey's Future of Wellness research finds consumers reporting gaps in cognitive health, mental health and mindfulness, and longevity. Gen Z feels these gaps more sharply than any other age group, especially across mental, cognitive, heart, and gut health.
Stress explains part of it. In the United States, 40 percent of Gen Z report feeling almost always stressed, compared with 23 percent of consumers overall.
Different generations, different front doors
Generations do not simply want different products. They enter care through different doors.
Gen Z tends to discover wellness through feeds, creators, and peers. Information arrives fast and in fragments. Trust is earned through transparency and consistency more than credentials alone, and social media can inflate certain categories well beyond their clinical weight. Gut health is a clear example.
Millennials often arrive through performance and caregiving: energy, sleep, focus, and the load of looking after others while working.
Gen X and older adults are more likely to seek care when something changes, such as a new symptom or a life transition like midlife. They value a known practitioner and a clear plan.
The industry's positioning has not caught up. Heart and cognitive support are still marketed mainly to older consumers, even though younger people report unmet needs in both.
Meeting people where they are
Meeting people where they are is a design decision, not a marketing tactic. It shapes format, timing, and depth. Younger audiences need short, credible education, low-cost first steps, and plans that fit a real schedule rather than an ideal one. Midlife and older audiences need continuity with one practitioner, clear explanation, and guidance that works alongside existing medical care.
Ayurveda was built around this principle. Classical practice starts with the individual's constitution and adjusts to the day and the season, a model of personalization that predates the wellness app by centuries.
Aligning resources to quality of life
The larger opportunity is not another product. It is directing attention and resources toward the fundamentals that shape everyday quality of life: sleep, meals, movement, attention, and connection. These are cumulative and hard to sell as a single purchase. They are also where durable change tends to happen.
That is the thinking behind Sankalpa, the Vidveda adherence approach: three commitments marked by a practitioner, reviewed weekly rather than daily, with no calorie counting and no food logging. Small, sustained, and judged over time.
The AI factor
AI is adding a new layer of pressure. Feeds are becoming more personalized and more persuasive. Conversational tools are increasingly used for companionship and self-diagnosis. Late-night screen time continues to displace sleep. Each of these works against the fundamentals above, and the generation already reporting the highest stress is also the most digitally immersed.
Left unmanaged, the measures that matter most, stress, sleep, focus, and a sense of connection, are more likely to decline than improve.
The answer is not to reject technology but to decide where it belongs. At Vidveda, AI supports the practitioner: preparing for consultations, drafting plans for review, noticing when a routine drifts. It does not replace the human relationship at the center of care.
